The fashion market is set into five sectors: 1. Haute Couture 2. High End Fashion 3. Middle Market 4. Mass Market and 5. Value Market.
The ideas from couture and designer catwalks filter down through the fashion market and are used as inspiration for ranges created by high-street retailers.
Whereas when ideas from street fashion and cultural subgroups gain momentum to become a trend that bubble up through the hierarchy of fashion, it eventually reaches the top when expensive designer versions are created.
In my view the distinction between the five sectors are pretty obvious within day-to-day living. For example both the look and the texture of a garment from Burberry is always going to stand out positively against a piece from River Island. However it is not the case that everyone can afford these limited edition pieces and so the typical middle-class woman can go to her favourite high street brand and get a similar take on a designer piece but for a fraction of the price.
Can you tell the difference straight away between designer and high street?
