Research on Annie Leibovitz

As part of one my university briefs I have chosen to focus on a piece of Annie Leibovitz photographs for Rolling Stone magazine - the magazine that got her to be where she is today.

Before I started my brief I wasn't too into photography as I have a bigger passion for writing and styling however after researching into both the photograph and Annie herself, I have been drawn in.

Annie started out as a photographer for Rolling Stone magazine and within two years she was promoted to Chief Photographer of the magazine - a title she would hold for the next ten years. Leibovitz in known for her love of bold primary colours and surprising poses which is probably why she has made many of Rolling Stone magazine covers collectors items i.e. photographing a nude John Lennon curled around his wife hours before his death.

After Rolling Stone, Leibovitz went on to photograph for Vanity Fair. With an array of subjects, Leibovitz now gets to photograph a range of people, from presidents to the queen to teen heartthrobs to the 'A-listers', think Demi Moore very pregnant and very nude.

Since researching Annie I really have been inspired by how she manages to connect all of these celebrities, musicians and film stars to the viewer.

Here are a few photographs that inspire me...

“I sometimes find the surface interesting. To say that the mark of a good portrait is whether you get them or get the soul – I don’t think this is possible all of the time.” Annie Leibovitz
